Most people know their Sun sign. Fewer know their Moon sign. In Vedic astrology the Moon is often the first point of contact with the chart, because it describes the emotional weather you live inside every day.
The short answer
The Sun describes the centre of gravity of the personality: vitality, purpose and what you are here to make visible. The Moon describes how you feel, settle and seek safety. The rising sign describes the interface through which both are expressed.
You are not one of these. You are the conversation between them. A Capricorn Sun with a Cancer Moon and a Libra rising will not read like a Capricorn Sun alone.
Why Vedic signs differ
Western astrology generally uses the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the equinox. Vedic astrology generally uses the sidereal zodiac, which is anchored to the fixed stars. The two have drifted apart by roughly 24 degrees over the last two millennia.
This means the same planet can fall in a different sign in the two systems. The difference is not a mistake in one system; it comes from a different starting point. AstroYoda uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the most widely used Vedic standard.
Why the Moon is so personal
The Moon moves fast. It changes sign every two and a half days, and changes nakshatra roughly every day. That speed makes it a sensitive marker of individuality. Even twins born on the same day may have different Moon nakshatras if they are born far enough apart.
The Moon is also the starting point of the Vimshottari dasha, the main timing system in Vedic astrology. Your birth nakshatra determines which planetary season you begin in.
How to find yours
You need a birth date, an exact birth time and a birth place. The time matters less for the Moon than for the ascendant, but it still matters: the Moon can change signs or nakshatras within a day.
If you do not know your birth time, use noon and treat the rising sign as provisional. The Moon sign is usually more stable than the ascendant across a few hours of uncertainty, but not always.
- Enter the birth details in the Moon sign calculator.
- Note the Moon sign, degree and nakshatra.
- Compare the Moon description with the Sun sign you already know.
- Read the ascendant separately, especially if your birth time is exact.
A useful next step
Put the guide into a real chart.
Reading about astrology is useful. Looking at your own placements, with clear context, is where it becomes a practice.
